Franklin Mint Hallmarked Silver Mosta Dome Travel Charm
This unique and rare sterling silver travel charm resembles the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, most commonly known as the Mosta Dome. The Mosta Dome was built between 1833 and the 1860s, taking around 28 years to complete its construction. The Mosta Dome carries a unique history, specifically during WWII. On April 9th 1942, the Luftwaffe dropped several bombs on the church, one of which was a high-explosive bomb which pierced the dome and entered the church while a congregation of over 300 people were attending Mass. Amazingly, the bomb did not explode, and the Royal Engineer Bomb Disposal unit quickly defused the bomb. This event was interpreted as a miracle by the Maltese people and would forever be known as Il-Miraklu tal-Bomba ("The Bomb Miracle").
Although this piece symbolizes a Maltese church, it was created in the U.K. This sterling silver charm is clearly hallmarked with "FM" (most likely Franklin Mint), a lion (symbolizing silver quality), a lion head town mark (symbolizing verification by the London Assay Office), and a lowercase "k" (symbolizing its creation in 1965). Please note, due to the age of the piece, there is patina that may not come off when polished, as is typical with vintage jewelry.
-Originated in London, U.K.
-Procured in Malta, Europe.
-L: 0.75", W: 0.80", D: 0.75".
-Comes in a kraft jewelry box.
-Comes with complimentary silver polishing cloth.
